The Whale Rider - Witi Ihimaera I found this book to be thought provoking - the clash of traditional ideas and more modern ideas, especially about the place of women, as well as seeing how younger people (the narrator of the book and his cousins/friends) manage to combine their more contemporary ways of life with tradition.

The relationship between humans and the whales is fascinating, and something to think about. A particularly nice touch is that the bull whale in charge isn't all-knowing and wise either - nice parallel between the human great-grandfather and the whale.
